The Search In 1864, Pasteur proved the existence of infectious microbes. In 1860, the most eminent professor medicine was Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes at the Harvard University Medical School. He had these hard words for the tools of his trade: I firmly believe that if the whole materia medica, as now used, could be sunk to the bottom of the sea it would be all the better for mankind -- and all the worse for the fishes. In 1981, it was announced by the World Health Organization that small-pox had been eradicated by means of vaccination. No cases were to be found anywhere on the face of the earth and none should ever occur again. |
